The Tennessean (March 5, 2016): Hendersonville Christian Academy senior forward Emilio Quemada and sophomore point guard Lauren Batey were recently selected to the Division II-Class A All-District 1 basketball teams. Quemada averaged 15 points and seven rebounds per game, and he was named the team’s most outstanding offensive player at the school’s recent winter sports awards ceremony. Quemada scored 30 points twice, had four games of 20 points or more and scored double-figure points on 16 occasions.
“Having the ball in his hands was always trouble for whoever we played,” Crusader head coach John Taylor said. “Since Emilio is such a great scorer, teams concentrated on stopping him, and it opened up opportunities for his teammates. He makes others around him better.”
Most Outstanding Offensive Player – #33 Emilio Quemada (Coach Taylor – March 2016): “What can I say about Emilio? He is a great player. Some players are good enough to score double digits from time to time, Emilio scored 10 or more points in 16 games. Not every player has the ability to score 20 points in a varsity game. He did it 4 times. Very few players are good enough to hit 30 points in a varsity game, Emilio did it twice. This would be a great accomplishment for any player to reach on any given night. Emilio was able to do this throughout the season when every single coach knew his name, what he was capable of, and their game plan was to shut him down. Emilio was faced with double teams, chasers, triangle and 2, and box and 1 defenses every game. Yes he shot a lot of times, but having the ball in his hands was trouble for the other teams. Trying to stop him meant other players had a chance to step up. When he wasn’t scoring, Emilio was creating opportunities for his teammates. That is why Emilio is our most outstanding offensive player.”
The Tennessean (part of the USA Today Network), Tennessee – January 8, 2016: The Crusaders – who were playing without two starters (juniors Andre Hambrick and Justin Antemann) – didn’t get any closer than nine points after that. Quemada scored his squad’s final 21 points, producing 27 of his career-high 31 points after halftime. “We have really struggled scoring,” Taylor said. “Emilio can’t do it all by himself. For whatever reason, some of the other guys rely too heavily on Emilio to do it all. He has to have some guys around him step up. He’s one of those kids who has the potential to score 20 or 30 points any given night, but we still can’t just rely on him. We have to have other guys step up. Those guys are youngsters.”
The News-Examiner from Gallatin, Tennessee – December 20, 2015: The Hendersonville Christian Academy boys basketball team received a double-double from senior forward Emilio Quemada as the Crusaders captured a 73-70, overtime win over Zion Christian Academy on Friday evening at the Mt. Juliet Christian Academy Christmas Tournament. Quemada scored 30 points and collected 10 rebounds for the Crusaders (2-11), who outscored Zion Christian 24-19 in the fourth quarter to force overtime. Then, they outscored the Eagles 11-8 in the extra session. Junior Justin Antemann provided 14 points for HCA, followed by Blake Smith (9), Andre Hambrick (6), Justin Bader (5), Joey Fragnoli (5) and Devin Carlisle (4). Zion Christian led 19-10 after one quarter, 30-28 at halftime and 43-38 after three quarters. Four Eagles scored in double figures, led by Josh Gleaves’ 18 points.
The Hendersonville Star News from Hendersonville, Tennessee – December 18, 2015: The Crusaders fell to 1-11 with a 69-52 loss at Grace Christian Academy. HCA trailed 23-4 after one quarter, 32-17 at halftime and 48-36 entering the final period. Senior Emilio Quemada led the Crusaders with 16 points, followed by Joseph Mussnug (10), Jalen Cole (7), Joey Fragnoli (5), Blake Smith (4), Peyton Shoulders (3), Justin Antemann (2), Justin Bader (2), Devin Carlisle (2) and Andre Hambrick (1).
Adam Brown (Hendersonville Standard, Tennessee – November 26, 2015): The Hendersonville Christian Academy boys basketball team dropped a pair of contests against Trousdale County and Monterey High School over the weekend. Both games were played at Trousdale County and the Crusaders took on the host school in the first match. A solid Yellow Jackets performance in the third quarter limited the Crusaders to seven points and paved the way for a 58- 50 win. Trousdale County led by only one point at halftime but a 17-6 third quarter advantage was the difference. Emilio Quemada led the Crusaders with a game high 21 points. Joseph Mussnug scored 12 points, Devin Carlisle had eight, Justin Antemann, Peyton Shoulders and Dillon Andress each had two and Jalen Cole and Andre Hambrick finished with one point apiece. In the second contest, Monterey jumped out to a 10 point halftime lead and held on for a 57-50 victory. HCA cut the lead to four points in the third quarter but got outscored in the final period. Quemada once again led the charge with a game high 23 points, which included five three-point baskets. Hambrick sank two threepointers for 15 points, Shoulders had three and Carlisle, Mussnug and Tanner Sturgis scored two points each. The Crusaders are now 0-3 on the season. They opened with a 58- 28 loss to Nashville Christian.
Coach Taylor (October, 2015): Senior guard Emilio Quemada is expected to provide some offensive firepower. “He’s going to be our go-to guy,” Taylor said. “He’s a strong guy and good ball-handler, and he’s a scorer. He’s a tough, hard-nosed player. Whenever I need a bucket, he’s my go-to guy.”
